Start with the actual mowable area

A garden can be suitable for a robot lawn mower at many different sizes, but the mower still needs enough capacity for the grass it must maintain. Using the entire property size can be misleading when the plot also contains a house, driveway, patio, pool, woodland or large planted areas.

A lawn may look generally gentle but still contain one bank that decides whether it is suitable for a robot lawn mower. Compare the mower's published slope limit with the steepest area it must actually mow, not the overall feel of the garden.

Surface conditions matter too. Wet grass, loose soil, uneven ground and side-slope travel can make a slope more difficult than the percentage alone suggests. For demanding hills, traction, wheel design and AWD can matter as much as raw motor power.

Tree cover does not rule out a robot mower — but navigation matters

A garden with trees can still be suitable for a robot lawn mower. The key question is how the chosen navigation system behaves where satellite view, visual landmarks or open space become limited.

RTK-based systems are strongest when positioning conditions are good, while modern mowers may combine RTK with cameras, LiDAR or other sensors to maintain awareness in more difficult areas. Dense tree cover, tall walls and buildings are therefore not automatic deal-breakers, but they are reasons to choose navigation more carefully.

  • Open sky: usually the easiest environment for satellite-based positioning.
  • Scattered trees: often manageable, especially with multi-sensor navigation.
  • Dense canopy: check how the mower positions itself when satellite visibility is reduced.
  • Tall walls or buildings: pay attention to narrow signal-obstructed corridors and hidden corners.

Measure the tightest route between lawn areas

Narrow corridors are one of the easiest things to miss when deciding whether a garden is suitable for a robot lawn mower. A mower may fit physically but still need enough space to navigate, turn and maintain reliable positioning.

Measure the narrowest usable route at ground level. Include the actual space between walls, hedges, raised beds, fences and other fixed objects. If the corridor is bordered by tall structures, also consider whether that route is difficult for the mower's navigation system.

Connected zones are easier than disconnected zones

A garden can be suitable for a robot lawn mower even when the grass is divided into front, back and side lawns. The main question is whether the mower can travel between those areas on its own.

Modern wire-free systems can often map several zones, corridors and no-go areas in software. If the zones are linked by traversable ground, one mower may be able to maintain the whole property. Completely disconnected areas are different: the mower may need to be carried or moved manually unless the product and installation support another solution.

Think about the route, not just the map

A virtual zone does not create a physical path. Ask: can the mower actually drive from zone A to zone B without climbing stairs, crossing an unsafe drop or passing through a permanently closed gate?

Flat paving next to grass is generally easier for close edge cutting than a raised wall or curb. Moveable objects such as toys, hoses and garden furniture also affect day-to-day reliability. Better object recognition can reduce interruptions, but a cleaner mowing area is still easier for any robot to manage.
